At a packed Tuks Stadium on Monday night, the University of Pretoria (Tuks) made history by winning the FNB Varsity Cup trophy for a record sixth time following a dominant performance against the NWU Eagles.

The Stripe Generation put on a brutal performance that left the Eagles with little breathing room in front of a sold-out home crowd that had been yelling, “This is our house” since the kickoff.

Tuks won by 31 points to 3, turning what people thought would be a close game into something one team dominated. It wasn’t just a win, it was a great chance to get back at the other team. The only problem Tuks encountered this season was earlier when they played against the same NWU Eagles, who beat them 30-22 in round five, but when they were on the big stage, in their own backyard, Tuks completely changed the story.

Coach Dewey Swartbooi will be proud this team didn’t just win the final, they made a statement. After a season where they lost just once to the very team they faced in the final, Tuks proved they are the benchmark of student rugby in South Africa.

For the NWU Eagles, it was a tough night. They came into the match full of confidence after a strong semi-final but couldn’t find their attacking rhythm against Tuks’ solid defense. The Eagles fought hard, but on this occasion, the Stripe Generation were simply too strong.

As the final whistle blew, the Tuks players piled on top of each other in pure joy. Medals around their necks, the 2026 trophy held high, they had just become the most successful team in Varsity Cup history.
