Sasolburg, Free State – A 15-year-old learner from HTS Sasolburg has tragically passed away after collapsing during a school rugby match, leaving the school community and education officials in shock.
Nhlakanipho Buthelezi, a Grade 9 learner, died on Friday, 10 April 2026, during an Under-15 match at DP de Villiers Stadium in Sasolburg. He reportedly experienced severe breathing difficulties while playing against Sasolburg High School and was rushed to Sasolburg Hospital, where he was later declared dead.
Free State Department of Education MEC, Dr MJ Maboya, expressed deep sadness over the incident and extended condolences to the learner’s family, friends, and school community.“We are deeply shocked by the tragic loss of Nhlakanipho Buthelezi, a young life cut short. Our hearts go out to his family, friends, and the HTS Sasolburg community. We extend our condolences and support during this difficult time,” said Maboya.
The match was part of the long-standing FNB Classic Clash between HTS Sasolburg and Sasolburg High School, an annual event that has been held for about 47 years.
Maboya also praised the quick response of medical personnel and assured that the department would provide support to both the family and the school.“We will support the school and family in any way possible. Nhlakanipho’s passing reminds us of the fragility of life. We stand with his loved ones and the school community in mourning this loss,” she added.
The Free State Department of Education confirmed that counselling and support services will be made available to learners, teachers, and all those affected by the tragedy.
The incident has left many in the community heartbroken, as they remember a young life lost too soon.
