The Proteas Women’s impressive campaign at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 came to a disappointing end on 2nd July 2026 as they fell 40 runs short against hosts England in a tense semi-final.

England won the toss and posted a competitive total of 169 for 5 in their 20 overs. Star all-rounder Nat Sciver-Brunt was the standout performer for the home side, securing the innings with a brilliant 75 that combined power. Her innings, supported by solid contributions from the middle order, set a challenging platform that put South Africa under early pressure during the chase.

In reply, the Proteas showed wonderful character. Opener Tazmin Brits led from the front with a fighting half-century, scoring 51 off 45 balls. Her innings were full of determination and clever stroke play, keeping South Africa in strife during the middle overs. However, the required run rate continued to climb as England’s disciplined bowling attack, led by their experienced seamers and spinners, tightened the screws and restricted the flow of boundaries.

Nonkululeko Mlaba was once again outstanding with the ball for South Africa, picking up 2 wickets for 25 runs and troubling the English batters with her accurate left-arm spin. Despite her efforts and those of the rest of the bowling unit, the Proteas could not quite find the momentum needed to overhaul England’s total.

Although the result brings their World Cup journey to a close, the Proteas can be extremely proud of their achievements. Reaching the semi-finals of a global tournament is a significant milestone that highlights the rapid growth of women’s cricket in South Africa.

The team displayed resilience, unity, and quality throughout the competition, winning over fans and neutrals alike. The nation salutes a group of players who gave everything on the field and made South Africa proud.
