Mangaung United FC narrowly defeated Super Eagle by 0-1 on Tuesday to extend the lead at the top of the Safa Free State ABC Motsepe league to four points ahead of their rivals, Mangaung City.
The Bloemfontein based outfit netted only one goal to seal three points in the game which was played at the Bohlokong stadium in Bethlehem.
United have been at the helm for a better part of the 2025/26 season and they keep the momentum going. Earlier in the season, they looked like they were running away with the league trophy leading with about 15 points or so but the likes of City, Sasolburg United and Super Eagle have kept the pace.
The Lengau boys are top of the log table with 52 points after 23 league games. They have only lost one game thus far, a good record one can say. City are four points behind the leaders. Sasolburg, third with 47 points and Eagle are sitting in fourth with 44 points.
The four teams are tipped as the title contenders, not ruling out Kovsies FC and the league defending champions African Warriors who are mathematically still in the contest. The next remaining fixtures will be very decisive as to who will be crowned the champions and go on to represent the province in this year’s national promotional play-offs.
United knows what it takes to win the league as they have won it about four times and going on to fail the play-offs tests. They will surely focus for the remainder of the games but a gold medal win comes early, as the last season runners-up continues to fight with their dear lives.
City suffered a 1-0 defeat to Maihlome Ihlasele in the last season inter provincial play-offs that saw their dream of playing in the playoffs going up in smoke. They are surely gunning to take it out right with one stream.
The league newcomers Sasolburg United who joined the league after purchasing the status of D’General FC have put on a good fight since the league started and they will continue to fight to the end.
