NWU FC played out to an entertaining 1-1 draw against Upington City at the Fanie Du Toit stadium on Saturday afternoon. In what was their opening match in the Motsepe Foundation Championship.
The NWU students filled the stadium to its capacity and it was an action packed battle as both teams showed real intent to claim maximum points. The NWU eagles opened the scoring in the first half through a well taken goal by Onkarabile Moswane. The Eagles could not build on that first half momentum as Upington City controlled proceedings which resulted in sustained pressure and a late goal by substitute Lebogang Chakale. Bafana Ba Gucci were reduced to ten man after captain Santonio Andreas was shown a red card after a rash challenge.
NWU coach Nkululeko Malgas urged his players to “build” on this performance.
The coach said: “ it was a very good point in our opening game, Going to the next game against Lerumo Lions it won’t be easy, it’s an away game, but the good thing is that we have enough footage of our opponents.
The NWU FC next face provincial rivals Lerumo Lions at the Dobsonville stadium,kickoff at 15h00 on Saturday 29 August.
