– The JB Marks Local Municipality has reintroduced traffic speed cameras and new enforcement technology in a bid to curb speeding and other traffic offences in Potchefstroom. The system was re-launched on Friday, 21 August 2026 by the MMC for Community Safety, Roads and Transport, Cllr Leon Mkhabela, flanked by stakeholders from Traffic Management Technologies (TMT).
The move comes after the municipality recorded a steep increase in speeding violations. The municipality said it is now taking responsibility to promote road safety ahead of the festive season.Cllr Mkhabela conceded that JB Marks has in the past struggled to enforce road traffic laws, especially speeding. He said: “For the sake of revenue collection, we are required by law to enforce these infringements and that is in line with revenue collection.”He added that speed cameras will be placed on all major roads in and around Potchefstroom.
Representing TMT, Frans Molaetsi said traffic officers will be equipped with state-of-the-art gadgets, moving away from the old manual system.“Our traffic officers will be equipped with state of the art gadgets from now on. We are no longer using a book to record traffic fines, two devices will now be used when a traffic stops you they will scan your licence and a held printer will instantly print the said offence that you will be charged with,” Molaetsi said.
He said traffic officers will undergo three days of training to understand the new system. In conclusion, the MMC warned motorists and road users to adhere to the rules of the road.“Our visibility will be greater than before,” Mkhabela warned.
