Potchefstroom — NWU FC Assistant Coach Lindani Nkabinde has called on students of the North-West University Potchefstroom Campus and the broader football fraternity to pack the Fanie Du Toit Sports Ground on Saturday, 22 August 2026.
The NWU Eagles host Upington City at 15h00 in what will be their first ever match in the Motsepe Foundation Championship.
For the newcomers, it will be more than just three points on offer. Nkabinde says the team is eager to lay down a marker for what promises to be an exciting season for the Purple Army.
Upington City will provide a stern test. Bafana Ba Gucci finished 7th in the 2025/26 season, narrowly missing out on the promotion playoffs.
“This is more than just another football match, it is an opportunity for us to represent our campus and everyone who has been supporting the team,” said Nkabinde.
“We have worked very hard in preseason building up to this opening match. We feel we are ready to give everything on the field. The players are ready, the supporters too.”
The clash also pits two of the division’s bright young coaches against each other — NWU FC’s Nkululeko Malgas and Upington City’s Thulani Nkosi.
NWU will host its home matches in Potchefstroom for the first half of the season while upgrades continue at the Mahikeng Campus Sports. Ground.
