The Prodigy Super Cup was held amidst fanfare this past weekend at Olen Park Stadium in Potchefstroom.

More than 15 teams, U/11, U/13, U/15 and U/17, participated in this massive tournament. Teams from Klerksdorp, Potchefstroom, Soweto, Rustenburg and other areas sweat it out for honors at this prestigious event in the calendar of local sport.

According to the organizer and founder of Prodigy Football Club, Mr Daniel Mochobo, “the main purpose of this successful annual tournament is to give the upcoming young players a chance to play soccer from a young age and to showcase their talent.

“We aim to motivate and give them skills to enhance their social skills to enable them to participate meaningfully in their respective communities.”

The tournament also saw local coaches receiving a coaching lecture to enhance their skills. Mochobo told The Sports Eye that from the previous event, four players were selected to participate in trials at Kaizer Chiefs, but only two were chosen and are currently with the Kaizer Chiefs development.

“Our wish is to see this tournament grow in leaps and bounds and have more teams from various districts and see more players grow and play professional soccer or even have a professional team from Potchefstroom.

“We have talent in Potchefstroom. We just need to build and shape so that they can become our players of tomorrow.”

Among the people who came seeking young and fresh talent from this tournament as part of scouting was a former professional soccer player, Fabian McCarthy, who played for professional teams like Moroka Swallows, Bloemfontein Celtics, Kaizer Chiefs, Sundowns and others.

Supporters came all the way from different areas with numbers to support their kids and their teams.

Among the local teams from Potchefstroom who participated in the tournament was Tiki Taka FC, who lost their last game to Sibanda United by 1-0. Potch United went face to face with HTS Klerksdorp from Klerksdorp, and they lost by 1-3.

In the final, HTS Klerksdorp locked horns with Prodigy and HTS Klerksdorp won by 1-0. The winner went home with a trophy, soccer kid and medals.
