The North West Department of Arts, Culture, Sports and Recreation through the Provincial Archives and Records Services received an award for “Excellence on Promoting Oral History” in the country during the 22nd Annual National Oral History Conference held on the 10th October at The Ranch Hotel in Limpopo.
These awards were hosted by the Oral History Association of South Africa in partnership with the National Department of Sport, Arts and Culture. Oral History programme was established to collect and preserve undocumented history of the previously marginalized communities in the country in order to bridge the gap within the archival collection.
It plays a vital role in preserving the voices, memories and experiences of people that might otherwise be lost to time. Promoting Oral History helps to connect generations, celebrate diversity and encourage people to share their own stories.
Oral History remains a catalyst for the Department to ensure accessibility to the knowledge of the heritage of the province and testimonies
